Together with the University of Zagreb/ Faculty of Agriculture, Croatia Osiguranje and The Croatian Agroeconomic Society (HAED), Genillard & Co organized a workshop held on 22nd September 2020 on the impact of climate change on agriculture in Croatia. The workshop was held at the Faculty of Agriculture in Zagreb, where 40 participants attended live, whilst 25 further participants followed the event online.
The objectives of the workshop were to
- Increase awareness of the consequences of climate change and, in particular, of climate risks for agriculture
- Advocate the need for improved and innovative risk management across all agricultural stakeholders
- Discuss with important stakeholders the shaping of a suitable risk management tool
Christopher Genillard (Genillard & Co) and Mario Njavro (Faculty of Agriculture) opened the workshop with an introduction in both Croatian and English. Thereafter, the Vice Dean for Science of the Faculty of Agriculture, Darko Vončina, the President of HAED, Marija Cerjak, and Vančo Balen, Director of Croatia Osiguranje, welcomed all attendees.
Every presentation given at the workshop was able to highlight different aspects of risks to farmers in Croatia and the influence of climate change: Mario Njavro provided a birds-eye overview of the risks and risk management tools available, Stefan Niemeyer and Andrej Ceglar (JRC MARS) presented the work of the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission on crop yield monitoring and forecasting and the effects of extreme weather events. Representatives of the State Hydrometeorological Institute, Ivana Cavlina Tomašević and Melita Perčec Tadić (DHMZ), addressed the impact of weather and climate change on agriculture in Croatia, whilst Krešimir Frančić (Croatia Osiguranje), focused on the insurance industry’s perspective.
Finally, the Agriculture Risk Metrics (ARM) portal was presented by Maria de Vries (Genillard & Co). Created by Genillard & Co and OSINT Analytics, this portal combines state-of-the-art data collection technology with risk insight analytics, resulting in an independent, easily understandable, live, comprehensive and holistic data platform enabling an understanding, monitoring and managing of agricultural risk. The ARM portal can be adapted to the needs of any stakeholder in agriculture, being utmost flexible in the usage of data sources and in applying visualization.
In conclusion, it was agreed that all stakeholders in Croatia should cooperate to work on management solutions to counter the negative effects of climate change on Croatian agriculture. By forging this pathway together, it was acknowledged that the availability of valid data on weather and agricultural production is of paramount importance when forming the basis of reliable weather risk predictions.
